THE Perodua Eco-Challenge is underway following the handing over of 12 units of the Perodua Myvi to the 12 local institutions of higher learning participating in the challenge.

Worth a total of RM480,000, the unregistered Myvis were handed over to representatives of the local higher learning institutes together with a check amounting to RM10,000 for the re-engineering costs to improve fuel efficiency.

“We want to challenge the students' engineering capabilities and at the same time spur the development of new technologies,” said Datuk Syed Abdul Hafiz Syed Abu Bakar, managing director of Perodua, during the handing over ceremony last Monday at the Perodua headquarters in Rawang.

The participating universities and polytechnics are Universiti Teknologi Petronas, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Mara, Universiti Industri Selangor, Universiti Tenaga Nasional, Universiti Islam Antarabangsa, Universiti Malaysia Pahang, Politeknik Ungku Omar, Universiti Malaya and Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia.

The Eco-Challenge will climax on June 21 at the Speedway Plus Circuit in Subang Jaya where the teams will go head to head to determine which re-engineered car covers the longest distance on a litre of fuel.

Apart from that, points will also be awarded based on creativity of the modifications to the Myvis, decorations adorning the cars as well as the support from their fellow students.

To keep the playing field level, the driver of the car must weigh 50kg or over and the car’s weight cannot be reduced to below 700kg.

WHAT IS PERODUA ECO-CHALLENGE?

This is one of Perodua program to challenge the student's engineering capabilities and at the same time spur the development of new technologies. The winning teams will be decided by the distance their “re-engineered” car covers with a given amount of fuel. Points will also be given to teams based on their creativity in the modification of the cars, decorations as well as support from their fellow students.

Each of the participating institutions of higher learning received an unregistered Perodua Myvi for their students to 're-engineer' the car to improve the fuel efficiency. Perodua also gave each institutions RM10,000 for the project.Invitations were sent to 21 universities and polytechnics throughout the country in January to send in project proposals for the Perodua Eco-Challenge.
